This means that the following actions take place:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The underlying companies make dividends payments to the fund<\/li>\n<li>The fund receives the dividends and proceed to pay them out to the investors<\/li>\n<li>Your broker receives this payment and credits it to your account<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So using a <strong>distributing ETF <\/strong>means that you will receive cash payments, in line with the <strong>distribution frequency<\/strong> of the fund.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a screenshot of the details of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ishares.com\/uk\/individual\/en\/products\/251900\/ishares-sp-500-ucits-etf-inc-fund\">IUSA<\/a> &#8211; a distributing ETF tracking the S&amp;P 500 index.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1727 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/dpetkovski\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IUSADetailsDIST.png\" alt=\"accumulating vs distributing etf\" width=\"937\" height=\"631\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Note the &#8220;<em>Use of Income<\/em>&#8221; and the &#8220;<em>Distribution Frequency<\/em>&#8220;. They describe that the ETF pays out dividends every quarter.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Accumulating_Funds\"><\/span>Accumulating Funds<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Accumulating funds reinvest the dividend payments in the fund<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The way the ETF works is exactly the same as any other &#8211; you buy shares of the ETF and your money is invested in the underlying companies.\u00a0This means that the following actions take place:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The underlying companies make dividends payments to the fund<\/li>\n<li>The fund receives the dividends and buys more shares of the underlying companies<\/li>\n<li>You don&#8217;t receive any cash, but your portfolio grew for the equivalent amount<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So using an <strong>accumulating ETF <\/strong>means that you won&#8217;t receive cash payments, but will have the dividend amount automatically reinvested for you by the fund.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a screenshot of the details of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justetf.com\/en\/etf-profile.html?isin=IE00BK5BQT80\">VWCE<\/a> &#8211; an accumulating ETF tracking the FTSE All-World index.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1728\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/dpetkovski\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/VWCEDetailsACC.png\" alt=\"accumulating vs distributing etf\" width=\"1307\" height=\"527\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Note the <em>&#8220;Distribution policy&#8221; <\/em>and the\u00a0<em>&#8220;Distribution frequency&#8221;. <\/em>They describe that the fund reinvests the dividends instead of paying them out.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Examples_of_accumulating_and_distributing_ETFs\"><\/span>Examples of accumulating and distributing ETFs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Note that there may be multiple ETFs tracking the same index, with the same costs, but different distribution policies.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the ETFs <em><strong>CSPX<\/strong> (iShares Core S&amp;P 500 UCITS ETF (Acc))<\/em> and <em><strong>VUSA<\/strong> (Vanguard S&amp;P 500 UCITS ETF)<\/em> both track the S&amp;P 500 and both have a <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/total-expense-ratio-the-importance-of-keeping-it-low\/\">TER<\/a> of 0.07%. But the one from iShares is an accumulating ETF and the one from Vanguard is a distributing ETF.<\/p>\n<p>Other ETFs that track the same index are<em> <strong>IVV<\/strong> (iShares Core S&amp;P 500 Index), <strong>VOO<\/strong> (Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF), <strong>SPY<\/strong> (SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF),<\/em> etc.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m trying to convey that there are various options and you need to pick the one that&#8217;s both available and makes sense to you &#8211; by going through the details as in the pictures above.<\/p>\n<p>Oftentimes, the type of the ETF is part of its name &#8211; having <em>Dist. <\/em>or\u00a0<em>Acc.<\/em> as a suffix. If not, the factsheet of any fund will have fields such as\u00a0<em>&#8220;Use of income&#8221;<\/em> or <em>&#8220;Distribution policy&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_One_is_Better\"><\/span>Which One is Better?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Remember: it doesn&#8217;t mean that you can get <em>&#8220;more money&#8221; <\/em>by going one way or the other. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whether the dividend is paid out or not will be reflected in the price of the ETF.<\/p>\n<p>And when you face the dilemma, you&#8217;re basically asking yourself the question of\u00a0<em>&#8220;do I want some extra cash every quarter or I want it automatically reinvested?&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Oftentimes,\u00a0it boils down to your preference and\/or the tax implications regarding dividends in your country.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"My_Opinion\"><\/span>My Opinion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I have a clear preference for accumulating funds because <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/dividend-investing-is-for-suckers\/\">receiving dividends is equivalent to selling<\/a><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When possible, I prefer my sell orders to be voluntary in frequency and amount rather than scheduled. Plus, I don&#8217;t need extra cash &#8211; I&#8217;m actually trying to get rid of the excess. So the only logically consistent conclusion is to prefer accumulating ETFs.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, everyone&#8217;s situation needs specific evaluation as it can depend on various other factors&#8230; The most relevant might be the age and retirement status, as distributing funds might make more sense for people who foresee that they&#8217;ll earn less in near future.
