Here is an example: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mempool.space\/\">mempool.space<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1991 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/dpetkovski\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/mempool.png\" alt=\"bitcoin halving\" width=\"808\" height=\"605\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During the early days of Bitcoin (2009), the reward for finding a block was 50BTC. So approximately every 10 minutes, a miner received 50BTC from the network. Keep in mind that the price of BTC back then was way lower than today.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, we all know that\u00a0<strong>Bitcoin has a limited supply of 21m<\/strong>. So this raises the question:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;How is it possible to produce 50 $BTC every 10 minutes if the supply is limited?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And this brings us to the\u00a0<strong>Bitcoin <\/strong><strong>block reward halving<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Bitcoins_Block_Reward_Halving\"><\/span>What is Bitcoin&#8217;s Block Reward Halving?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As you already know, <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/how-the-money-printer-makes-you-poor\">increasing the supply of a currency<\/a> causes <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/inflation-explained\/\">inflation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/the-inevitability-of-bitcoin\">Bitcoin is deflationary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is achieveable because the amount of $BTC that comes into circulation lowers over time. This is known as the <strong>block reward halving<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately every 4 years (210,000 blocks), the reward the miners get for mining a block gets cut in half. This is part of Bitcoin&#8217;s code.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned before:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the beginning, the Bitcoin block reward was <strong>50 $BTC<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>first halving<\/strong>\u00a0happened in November 2011 and the block reward became\u00a0<strong>25 $BTC<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>second halving<\/strong>\u00a0happened in July 2016 and the block reward became\u00a0<strong>12.5 $BTC<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>third halving <\/strong>happened in May 2020 and the block reward became <strong>6.25 $BTC<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>fourth halving\u00a0<\/strong>will happen in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicehash.com\/countdown\/btc-halving-2024-05-10-12-00\">April 2024<\/a> &#8211; that&#8217;s why I&#8217;m publishing this post ASAP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This process will continue in the future until all 21 million $BTC are mined. This will happen in the year 2140, when the last bitcoin enters in circulation.<\/p>\n<p>After the fact, the miners will only earn from transaction fees paid by the users, not from block rewards.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Halvings_Effect_on_the_Bitcoin_Price\"><\/span>The Halving&#8217;s Effect on the Bitcoin Price<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Take a look at the picture below.<\/p>\n<p>The vertical lines represent the dates when the Bitcoin block reward got cut in half.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1987\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1987\" class=\"wp-image-1987 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/dpetkovski\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/bitcoin-halving-1024x632-1.png\" alt=\"bitcoin halving\" width=\"1024\" height=\"632\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1987\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/chart\/BTCUSD\/NRAuRwKO-TA-2022-08-06-BTC-Halving-Analysis\/\">Source<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>As you can see, there isn&#8217;t any significant price action during the halving events.<\/p>\n<p>However, each block reward halving creates a <strong>supply shock<\/strong> for the Bitcoin market.<\/p>\n<p>All of a sudden, the miners earn half of what they used to just a moment ago. The only way for mining to remain profitable is with a price increase. At the same time, there&#8217;s half the sell pressure from miners that sell $BTC to fund their business operations.<\/p>\n<p>From there, it&#8217;s a simple function of the\u00a0the law of supply and demand. And the<strong> supply <\/strong>side of the equation is predetermined for Bitcoin. So it all becomes a function of\u00a0<strong>demand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As long as Bitcoin stays relevant, a price increase is a guarantee. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Think about it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The only alternative is that everyone abandons the Bitcoin network. And in this case, $BTC will go to 0.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"My_Experience_with_Previous_Halvings\"><\/span>My Experience with Previous Halvings<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had a chance to be part of previous halving events and use them to my advantage.<\/p>\n<p>So this is not something that I&#8217;m writing in hindsight. The Bitcoin block reward halving event is the <strong>biggest leading indicator<\/strong> I use to position myself for every cycle.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve stated it publicly every time, but my buy orders speak for themselves:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1349 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/dpetkovski\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/btc2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"587\" height=\"504\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Riding the\u00a0<strong>4 year cycles\u00a0<\/strong>like a pro.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No luck involved.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just understanding of <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/supply-and-demand-an-introduction\">the law of supply and demand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And when everyone is terrified of the &#8220;crypto winter&#8221;, the smart money stacks cheap sats. Here&#8217;s my daily Bitcoin accumulation during the absolute depths of this cycle:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1348 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/dpetkovski\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/btc-december.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"496\" height=\"467\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Does_This_Happen\"><\/span>Why Does This Happen?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The answer is simple:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bitcoin is a deflationary asset.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As long as you&#8217;re measuring the value of everything in terms of your local currency, you&#8217;ll remain a slave of your government. You&#8217;ll think in terms of <em>&#8220;the price of Bitcoin&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>and say things like\u00a0<em>&#8220;housing prices went up&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>All of that is nonsense.<\/p>\n<p>What actually happens is that the <strong>value of your currency went down<\/strong>. And this happens\u00a0<strong>exclusively\u00a0<\/strong>because of creation of more money AKA <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/how-the-money-printer-makes-you-poor\"><strong>money printing<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In other words: FIAT currencies are <strong>inflationary<\/strong> &#8211; their supply is increasing and they lose purchasing power over time.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike them, Bitcoin is <strong>deflationary\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; it has a limited supply, and given demand, its purchasing power increases over time.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bitcoin_Ideology_vs_Investment\"><\/span>Bitcoin: Ideology vs Investment<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Full disclosure, I don&#8217;t consider Bitcoin:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An investment<\/li>\n<li>A profitable trade<\/li>\n<li>A get-rich-quick scheme<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bitcoin fixes the root cause for the collapse of every empire in human history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It decouples money from state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Considering it just as a tool to &#8220;make money&#8221; is foolish.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Money&#8221; is doomed to fail, as it has many times in history.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/monkwealth.com\/the-inevitability-of-bitcoin\"><strong>Bitcoin is inevitable.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Only those that understand this and start their pursuit for absolute liberty may achieve the side-effect of financial gains.<\/p>\n<p>Not the other way around.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>If you want an introduction to Bitcoin without technical jargon and price speculation, check out my <strong>free series<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/bitcoin-for-beginners\/\"><strong>Bitcoin for Beginners<\/strong><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The block reward halving is one of the key characteristics of Bitcoin.
