This might be holding a specific asset, being a participant in a particular community, or meeting other conditions.<\/p>\n<p><em>But why would someone give away free money?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that before the distribution, the tokens are worthless. They&#8217;re still not launched, nobody traded them, and they don&#8217;t have a price.<\/p>\n<p>Once users receive the tokens, a market emerges and the tokens get a price based on trading activity.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Projects_Distribute_Their_Tokens\"><\/span>Why Projects Distribute Their Tokens?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Before an airdrop, the total token supply is controlled by the team.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution is\u00a0often used as a &#8220;marketing strategy&#8221; to create awareness, attract new users, or encourage community participation.<\/p>\n<p>But in order for the airdrop to have the intended effect, the project must choose which addresses to distribute to.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Projects_Determine_Airdrop_Eligibility\"><\/span>How Projects Determine Airdrop Eligibility?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Imagine a crypto project that&#8217;s already live but still doesn&#8217;t have a token.<\/p>\n<p>Certain users are interested in it, use it, interact with it, etc. Eventually, the team takes a\u00a0<strong>snapshot<\/strong> of the addresses that did certain actions until a specific moment in time.<\/p>\n<p>And most often they announce that there&#8217;ll be an airdrop only after the snapshot is taken, to prevent bots and airdrop hunters robbing the loyal community from their early-participation reward.<\/p>\n<p>And eventually, new tokens appear in your wallet &#8211; some might be worth a hundred bucks, but some might be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Airdrop_Examples_%E2%80%93_Case_Studies\"><\/span>Airdrop Examples &#8211; Case Studies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Positioning for airdrops gets more strict as time goes by, so it&#8217;s best to make use of this knowledge ASAP.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll give some examples of past airdrops so you can get the general idea of their eligibility criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Note: these were not the biggest airdrops, but they&#8217;re quite popular and worth covering.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Uniswap_Airdrop_2020\"><\/span>Uniswap Airdrop (2020)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As you probably know, <a href=\"https:\/\/uniswap.org\/\">Uniswap<\/a> is the most popular decentralized exchange (DEX).<\/p>\n<p>The $UNI token was distributed to all addresses that executed a swap before September 17th, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Every eligible address received 400 $UNI tokens or around $14k at all time high.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Arbitrum_Airdrop_2023\"><\/span>Arbitrum Airdrop (2023)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;ll go in a bit more details about the $ARB criteria because it created a standard that airdrop hunters try to replicate with other networks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arbitrum.io\/\">Arbitrum<\/a> is a L2 network built on top of Ethereum and their eligibility criteria was based on the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Qualifying actions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Bridged funds into Arbitrum One<\/li>\n<li>Conducted transactions during two distinct months<\/li>\n<li>Conducted transactions during six distinct months<\/li>\n<li>Conducted transactions during nine months<\/li>\n<li>Conducted more than four transactions or interacted with more than four different smart contracts<\/li>\n<li>Conducted more than ten transactions or interacted with more than ten different smart contracts<\/li>\n<li>Conducted more than 25 transactions or interacted with more than 25 different smart contracts<\/li>\n<li>Conducted more than 100 transactions or interacted with more than 100 different smart contracts<\/li>\n<li>Conducted transactions exceeding in the aggregate $10,000 in value<\/li>\n<li>Conducted transactions exceeding in the aggregate $50,000 in value<\/li>\n<li>Conducted transactions exceeding in the aggregate $250,000 in value<\/li>\n<li>Bridged more than $10,000 of assets into Arbitrum One<\/li>\n<li>Bridged more than $50,000 of assets into Arbitrum One<\/li>\n<li>Bridged more than $250,000 of assets into Arbitrum One<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>from the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.arbitrum.foundation\/airdrop-eligibility-distribution\">Arbitrum Docs<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And then, based on how many actions you&#8217;ve done until February 6th, 2023, you&#8217;d get a distribution:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Less than 3<\/strong> &#8211; Not eligible<\/li>\n<li><strong>3 actions<\/strong> &#8211; 1,250 $ARB<\/li>\n<li><strong>4 actions<\/strong> &#8211; 1,750 $ARB<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><strong>12 actions<\/strong> &#8211; 10,250 $ARB (maximum allocation)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>$ARB&#8217;s price at the moment of writing is around $2.<\/p>\n<p>Some caveats:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Addresses with all actions done within 48 hours of each other were deducted a point (obvious airdrop hunters, not legitimate users).<\/li>\n<li>Clusters of addresses obviously belonging to the same user were disqualified (same onchain behavior, withdrawing to the same addresses on exchanges, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>My point: the game matured from the good old days of &#8220;do a swap and get $10k&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Hunt_Airdrops\"><\/span>How to Hunt Airdrops?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It basically boils down to staying up to date with new developments and upcoming narratives in the cryptosphere.<\/p>\n<p>This post was meant to be an introduction rather than a tutorial, so let me know if you&#8217;d like a detailed guide on airdrop hunting.
