a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/total-expense-ratio-the-importance-of-keeping-it-low\/\">total expense ratio<\/a>\u00a0of 0.18% and is an accumulating fund (reinvests the dividends). Its TER is higher compared to US ETFs like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/cspx-vs-vusa-vs-iusa-my-thoughts\/\">CSPX or VUSA<\/a>, but at the same time quite cheap for an emerging market ETF.<\/p>\n<p>By investing in this fund, you get exposure to over 2800 companies in developing countries. These companies vary in market cap, so you\u2019d be diversified in large, mid, small-cap companies.<\/p>\n<p>Below is the geographical distribution of EMIM:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2240\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/dpetkovski\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/em-geography.png\" alt=\"emerging markets\" width=\"1237\" height=\"754\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For investors that prefer a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/accumulating-vs-distributing-etfs\/\">distributing rather than an accumulating<\/a>\u00a0alternative of this ETF, there\u2019s\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ishares.com\/uk\/individual\/en\/products\/251857\/ishares-msci-emerging-markets-ucits-etf-inc-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IEEM<\/a>\u00a0(iShares MSCI EM UCITS ETF (Dist))<\/strong>, sharing most of the characteristics and tracking the same index.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_ICHN\"><\/span>2)\u00a0<strong>ICHN<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Ticker symbols: ICHN, ICGA, ISIN: IE00BJ5JPG56<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ishares.com\/uk\/individual\/en\/products\/308751\/ishares-msci-china-ucits-etf-usd-acc-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICHN<\/a>\u00a0(iShares MSCI China UCITS ETF)\u00a0<\/strong>is an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/etfs-exchange-traded-funds\/\">ETF<\/a>\u00a0offered by the same provider that tracks the MSCI China index.<\/p>\n<p>It has a TER of 0.4% and is an accumulating fund.<\/p>\n<p>This is a good option for investors that want to invest in the Chinese stock market, but don\u2019t like additional emerging markets exposure.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth mentioning that Tencent Holdings and Ali Baba Group are 20% of the allocation of the fund. At the same time, it\u2019s quite diversified, covering ~85% of the Chinese market, distributed across large and mid-cap companies.<\/p>\n<p>Because geographically its concentrated in one country, below is the sector distribution of the ETF:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2241\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/dpetkovski\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/china-sectors.png\" alt=\"emerging market\" width=\"990\" height=\"630\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_BKF\"><\/span>3)\u00a0<strong>BKF<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ishares.com\/us\/products\/239614\/ishares-msci-bric-etf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BKF<\/a>\u00a0(iShares MSCI BIC ETF)\u00a0<\/strong>is another emerging market ETF tracking the MSCI BIC index.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BIC\u00a0<\/strong>stands for\u00a0<strong>B<\/strong>razil,\u00a0<strong>I<\/strong>ndia,\u00a0<strong>C<\/strong>hina. There\u2019s also a BRIC variation, which also includes Russia.<\/p>\n<p>This ETF has a TER of 0.7% and distributes the dividends.<\/p>\n<p>Although more expensive than the previous ones,\u00a0<strong>BKF<\/strong>\u00a0may be an option for investors that look for a more concentrated position than\u00a0<strong>EMIM<\/strong>, but a more diversified one that\u00a0<strong>ICHN<\/strong>. With China having ~65% allocation at the time of writing, it may be the sweet spot between the 30% and 100%. And the inclusion of India and\/or Brazil might be crucial for some investors.<\/p>\n<p>I wouldn\u2019t recommend it for a large allocation in a diversified portfolio, as it\u2019d heavily increase the average cost, reducing the long-term growth potential.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"My_Pick_For_an_Emerging_Market_ETF\"><\/span>My Pick For an Emerging Market ETF<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Given how different the choices are, the decision will really depend on what you want in your portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>However, there\u2019s an obvious choice when comparing all the relevant aspects of the ETFs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Geographical diversification:\u00a0<\/strong>EMIM<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cost:<\/strong>\u00a0EMIM<\/li>\n<li><strong>Number of companies:\u00a0<\/strong>EMIM<\/li>\n<li><strong>Market cap variety<\/strong>: EMIM<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fund size:<\/strong>\u00a0EMIM<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"EMIM_is_the_clear_winner\"><\/span><strong>EMIM<\/strong>\u00a0is the clear winner.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s a fact, EMIM is the way to go for investors that seek global exposure.<\/p>\n<p>The only reason\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong> to go with it is if someone prefers a more concentrated position. As mentioned before, some investors might want exposure to China, but not necessarily to other countries. This, of course, should be taken into account, and I think that <strong>ICHN<\/strong>\u00a0then becomes a reasonable pick.<\/p>\n<p>And lastly, I don\u2019t think that an emerging market ETF is a must in everyone\u2019s portfolio. It really depends on the expectations and preferences of the investor.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, EM\u2019s performance behaves more like a hedge in a downturn economy than something that overperforms the developed markets during good times.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I\u2019ve never had more than 5% of my portfolio in emerging markets, and I think 5-10% is a <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/asset-allocation-finding-your-ideal-distribution\/\">reasonable allocation<\/a> for investors <strong>that want EM exposure<\/strong>.
