Spread the Word<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-10\" href=\"http:\/\/localhost\/dpetkovski\/capital-gains-and-wealth-tax-in-the-netherlands-box-3-taxes\/#Closing_Thoughts\" title=\"Closing Thoughts\">Closing Thoughts<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Capital_Gains_Tax_in_The_Netherlands\"><\/span>Capital Gains Tax in The Netherlands<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The capital gains tax in the Netherlands is 0%.<\/p>\n<p>Yup, you&#8217;ve read that right!<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of how much gains you realize, you pay nothing on the profit.<\/p>\n<p>This also applies to interest earned from fixed-income investments.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, we don&#8217;t have a reporting obligation to detail all of our buy and sell orders.<\/p>\n<p>Quite straight forward and oftentimes surprising to many.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wealth_Tax_in_The_Netherlands\"><\/span>Wealth Tax in The Netherlands<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is where they get us.<\/p>\n<p>Many countries aspiring to downgrade to a variation of a proven-to-fail system aim to punish &#8220;the rich\u201d and enforce a tax on savings and investments.<\/p>\n<p>And based on the Dutch tax code, apparently, being rich means having a net-worth above \u20ac57k.<\/p>\n<p>The tax we end up paying every year is 1.5-2.5% of our net-worth above the threshold.<\/p>\n<p>Things <strong>included\u00a0<\/strong>in this calculation are: cash, stocks, bonds, cryptocurrencies, precious metals, real estate, other alternative investments, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Things <strong>excluded\u00a0<\/strong>from it are: the primary residence, cars, and any non-investment-purpose possessions (laptops, clothing, etc.). Of course, there are other taxes for housing and car ownership, but that&#8217;s besides the point.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_the_Wealth_Tax_Calculated\"><\/span>How is the Wealth Tax Calculated?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Disclaimer:<\/strong> the exact numbers change every year, so I\u2019ll be casual with my rounding to explain how it works in a simple manner. Refer to the tax authorities&#8217; website if you&#8217;re doing a precise calculation: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belastingdienst.nl\/wps\/wcm\/connect\/nl\/box-3\/box-3\">Belastingdienst<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The way the Dutch wealth tax is calculated is based on the <strong>assumption<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>that you&#8217;ve <strong>realized<\/strong> the stock market&#8217;s historical rate of return with your investments exceeding \u20ac57k. Then, they tax you at a rate of 36% on the <strong>assumed\u00a0<\/strong>return.<\/p>\n<p>For example, let&#8217;s say you have \u20ac1M worth of investments on 1st of January.<\/p>\n<p>The first \u20ac57k are tax free.<\/p>\n<p>The tax authorities will <strong>assume<\/strong> that you&#8217;ve realized ~7% return on the other \u20ac943k, amounting to ~\u20ac66k.<\/p>\n<p>And you\u2019ll need to pay a fake <em>&#8220;capital gains tax&#8221;<\/em> of ~36% on these <strong>assumed<\/strong> profits, which is ~\u20ac24k.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In summary: having an investment portfolio of one million will set you back \u20ac24k every year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once again, this is enforced regardless whether you made those returns, whether you realized any gains, or whether you lost half of your money.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Short_Commentary\"><\/span>Short Commentary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In my opinion, this is immoral and should be illegal.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueumbrella.nl\/news\/tax-back-for-people-who-complained-about-box-3\">supreme court tends to agree<\/a>, as wealth taxes violate the <a href=\"https:\/\/fra.europa.eu\/en\/eu-charter\/article\/17-right-property\">European convention on human rights<\/a> (our entitlement to peaceful\u00a0enjoyment of our possessions).<\/p>\n<p>The bureaucrats circumvent this by referring to the wealth tax as <em>&#8220;capital gains tax on assumed gains based on the historical market rate of return&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But &#8220;assumed gains&#8221; aren&#8217;t real. They don&#8217;t exist. In reality, you pay 1.5-2.5% of your net-worth on 1st of January that fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>So, Box 3 Belasting it <strong>not<\/strong> a substitute for capital gains tax.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also not a tax on unrealized gains.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s tax <strong>regardless<\/strong>\u00a0of gains.<\/p>\n<p>Effectively, a\u00a0<strong>wealth tax<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Long-Term_Consequences\"><\/span>Long-Term Consequences<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>At the end, the productive workers are the ones that are most hurt by this &#8211; the non-professional investors that <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/dca-dollar-cost-averaging-investment-strategy-explained\/\">prudently invest a portion of their salary<\/a> into <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/index-investing-index-funds-a-gentle-introduction\/\">index funds<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/etfs-exchange-traded-funds\/\">ETFs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say someone allocates their savings in a <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/why-the-stock-market-always-goes-up\/\">diversified stock portfolio<\/a> over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Without taxation on wealth, even if the capital gains tax rate was higher, the person would pay nothing in taxes until he starts realizing gains. But in the Netherlands, you\u2019d be giving away ~2% of your wealth regardless of what happens with it every year.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve recently talked to a person with a (relatively) low salary but (relatively) high net-worth. As the box 3 tax is not based on realized gains, he literally has to work 6 months just to afford to pay taxes.<\/p>\n<p>How is this beneficial to the working class?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Can_You_Do\"><\/span>What Can You Do?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, there isn&#8217;t a way to avoid the Dutch wealth tax, so don&#8217;t waste your money on tax advisors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Always file your taxes truthfully and completely.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As long as you live in the Netherlands, you should abide by the Dutch tax code.<\/p>\n<p>Besides that, there are\u00a0a few things you can do:<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Accept\"><\/span>1. Accept<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The easiest approach is to just accept that box 3 is the price of living in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>But if you really\u00a0disagree with the socialist habits of punishing discipline and accumulation of wealth, you can file objections. Don&#8217;t expect anything, but let the tax authorities know that you think this violates your rights to enjoy your property.<\/p>\n<p>People that had their savings in bank accounts did this and the supreme court decided that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueumbrella.nl\/news\/tax-back-for-people-who-complained-about-box-3\">they need to be reimbursed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If more investors start doing this, we might end up with a system that&#8217;s fair to everyone. That leads us to:<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Educate\"><\/span>2. Educate<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Many people have a tendency to defend the system. Of course, most are net beneficiaries of it, so it&#8217;s in their best interest.<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;ve talked with investors that do so as well &#8211;\u00a0I noticed that most are misinformed how investment returns are taxed in other countries (i.e. that there&#8217;s no ongoing extortion if you stay in the market).<\/p>\n<p>Let our countrymen know that given the same investment strategy and net-worth, people on the other side of the Dutch border pay 0 until they sell for a profit, or in some cases not even then.<\/p>\n<p>For some, this was an eye opening information, but others insisted to turn a blind eye due to a severe case of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stockholm_syndrome\">Stockholm syndrome<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Spread_the_Word\"><\/span>3. Spread the Word<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I find it really sad that this is not covered nearly enough.<\/p>\n<p>Any article that describes &#8220;Dutch capital gains tax&#8221; lists it as 33-36%.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s false &#8211; 33-36% is the rate at which the <strong>assumed<\/strong> returns are taxed. Not the actual capital gains.<\/p>\n<p>Every time I share how it works, especially with foreigners, they&#8217;re mind blown.<\/p>\n<p>So spread the word.<\/p>\n<p>Expose box 3 taxes for what they truly are: unconstitutional taxes on our wealth.<\/p>\n<p>I just did my part.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Closing_Thoughts\"><\/span>Closing Thoughts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Overall, I think that the Netherlands is a good place to live in, even with most taxes priced in.<\/p>\n<p>For most people, the pros definitely outweigh the cons\u2026 But this one con (pun intended) of wealth taxation is something many have difficulties closing their eyes on.<\/p>\n<p>I wasn\u2019t trying to present parts of the fiscal policy in a negative way, but just to merely state how it works.
