Money Can&#8217;t Make You Happy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Okay, I agree.<\/p>\n<p>Money can&#8217;t make you happy, indeed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>However, lack of money also can&#8217;t make you happy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mind blown, right? <b>\ud83e\udd2f<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t understand how some people connect money to happiness in an exclusive way. But I understand that many use it as an excuse to indulge in excessive self-sabotage by disregarding the importance of personal finance.<\/p>\n<p>So yes, &#8220;<em>money<\/em>&#8220;, as any other <strong>single thing<\/strong> in the world, can&#8217;t make you happy <strong>by itself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We should seek happiness elsewhere.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because the opposite is not the solution to living a fulfilling and happy life, 100%.<\/p>\n<p>With that said, given unfortunate circumstances and all else equal, a person with a good safety net will have a much better experience than someone that drowns in debt and taking a month off puts him at risk of homelessness.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not a case of happiness. It&#8217;s a case of\u00a0<strong>opportunity<\/strong>. Having one concern less is <strong>always\u00a0<\/strong>superior to not. And the fact that\u00a0<em>some rich people are miserable<\/em> doesn&#8217;t prove anything. Some poor people are miserable too. People are miserable <strong>regardless of money<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong> the truthfulness of &#8220;<em>money can&#8217;t make you happy<\/em>&#8221; is irrelevant. It mustn&#8217;t be a mental block for earning more, developing financial literacy, or <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/category\/investing\/\">investing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_You_Need_Money_to_Make_Money\"><\/span>2. You Need Money to Make Money<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Again, I agree.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you&#8217;re investing, speculating, or taking any type of risk, the potential rewards will be higher and the experience will be easier the wealthier you are.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not debating the truthfulness of the statement. But similarly to the first point, it&#8217;s an excuse many people use in order to ignore every opportunity coming their way just because they allegedly &#8220;<em>don&#8217;t have<\/em>&#8221; &#8220;<em>money<\/em>&#8220;&#8230; So they spend it all happily.<\/p>\n<p>So yes, you need money to make money.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But you also need money to spend money.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>\ud83e\udd2f<\/b><\/p>\n<p>You need money to live.<\/p>\n<p>In other words: this statement is as irrelevant and unnecessary as saying that money can&#8217;t make you happy. Thus this mindset is best abandoned. Because every day that it&#8217;s used as an excuse to <strong>not\u00a0<\/strong>invest is a day in which your past productivity is not compounded.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Time_is_Money\"><\/span>3. Time is Money<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>They&#8217;re indeed often traded between each other&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Again, not fully incorrect as most people earn by selling some of their time. But once you build a robust investment portfolio,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>you&#8217;ll see that you don&#8217;t need to sell more time to make more money anymore. And then, you can choose to work more efficiently, prioritize health, and pick your ideal working conditions.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, I&#8217;ve watched a video of a woman saying: &#8220;<em>What should I do to raise my child? Get a third job?<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>You see the psychological damage <strong>time is money <\/strong>inflicted on her? Notice these two points:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If she didn&#8217;t fall for the &#8220;<em>time is money<\/em>&#8221; narrative, she could have thought in terms of &#8220;<em>a better job<\/em>&#8221; rather than &#8220;<em>a <strong>third<\/strong> job<\/em>&#8220;.<\/li>\n<li>You don&#8217;t have business having kids until you&#8217;re ready to provide for them. <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/how-we-gave-3-citizenships-to-our-son\/\">I have every right to say this<\/a>. Bringing kids to the world without a plan is self-centric and selfish.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>And talking about selfish, the actual problem with this misconception is that it leads to believing and fighting for socialist nonsense such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Equal pay for equal work\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; quantified solely based on the time spent working, not the output and <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/supply-and-demand-an-introduction\/\">value to society<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fair share\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; demanded by the people who contribute the least from the people who contribute the most.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Raising minimum wage <\/strong>&#8211; and make everything more expensive, hurt businesses and thus jobs, and the &#8220;<em>capitalists<\/em>&#8221; they go after will end up &#8220;<em>exploiting<\/em>&#8221; it by crushing the competition based on who can afford to pay the higher wage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Time is not money.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most wealth isn&#8217;t generated by trading more time.<\/p>\n<p>My net-worth grew by $150k last month an my salary isn&#8217;t even 10% of that amount.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Money_is_the_Root_of_All_Evil\"><\/span>4. Money is the Root of All Evil<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You find yourself on an island with 10,000 other people. Collectively, you have skills to maintain a functional society, but if segregated into smaller groups, you wouldn&#8217;t last long.<\/p>\n<p>One day, as any other, all people walk into the grocery store and demand food. Who should get this limited resource?<\/p>\n<p>One way to decide is to trade food for the goods and services provided by the other people. But the <strong>chef<\/strong> might have an inclination towards the work (or the products) of a <strong>hunter<\/strong> or a <strong>farmer<\/strong>, in which case the <strong>architect<\/strong> and the <strong>teacher<\/strong> would eventually starve. A typical case of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coincidence_of_wants\">coincidence of wants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Long story short, the decision is best left to the <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/consumer-and-producer-surplus-deadweight-loss\/\"><strong>free market<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The society itself should decide who will be able to enjoy others&#8217; efforts, by exchanging <strong>points\u00a0<\/strong>for the products and services of those who contributed to it. And the best way of quantifying the value of everyone&#8217;s work is by using a standardized and reliable system of transacting. That&#8217;s how the society, as a whole, decides who to buy from, whose services to pay for, and ultimately, who will be able to eat.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, the alternative is trading the actual services, which is driven by personal interest and clearly leads to corruption and discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>So is money the &#8220;<em>root of all evil<\/em>&#8220;? Well&#8230; I&#8217;d say that the root cause is elsewhere:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Corruption might be the root cause.<\/li>\n<li>Laziness might be the root cause.<\/li>\n<li>Greed might be the root cause.<\/li>\n<li>Ego might be the root cause.<\/li>\n<li>Stupidity might be the root cause.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not &#8220;money&#8221; by itself.<\/p>\n<p>But I agree with the premise that <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/cash-vs-stocks-in-30-years\">FIAT money sucks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe we should switch to a <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/the-inevitability-of-bitcoin\/\">digital alternative<\/a>, given that the <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/the-death-of-the-gold-standard-what-happened-in-1971-part-1\">gold standard is dead<\/a>. Regardless, the need for a reliable system to trade goods and services is <strong>absolute\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>universal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_I_Dont_Care_About_Money\"><\/span>5. I Don&#8217;t Care About Money<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Why don&#8217;t you or your provider reject compensation then?<\/p>\n<p>I understand that you might feel that you don&#8217;t &#8220;<em>care<\/em>&#8221; about &#8220;<em>money<\/em>&#8220;, but I know you &#8220;<em>care<\/em>&#8221; about calorie intake. Basically, if you&#8217;re not planning to die in the near future, <strong>you do care about money<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At the end, we&#8217;re all beings operating at the level of abstraction we can control, bound by the laws of physics first, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/obstacles-to-efficiency-taxes-price-controls-trade-restrictions\/\">rules of a government<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/how-the-money-printer-makes-you-poor\">central bank<\/a> second.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is: We get paid, we spend, we trade, and we pay mandatory taxes with money.<\/p>\n<p>The world dictates the importance of being financially stable. It&#8217;s not my opinion&#8230; <strong>It&#8217;s a fact<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So, learn about finance &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/supply-and-demand-an-introduction\/\">law of supply and demand<\/a>, taxes and <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/investment-taxes-in-all-eu-countries\">their effect on society<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/inflation-explained\/\">inflation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/opportunity-cost-with-a-twist\/\">opportunity cost<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/why-the-stock-market-always-goes-up\/\">understand market cycles<\/a>, etc.<\/p>\n<p>And if that&#8217;s too much for you, just be honest &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/how-to-do-what-you-love\">embrace your nature<\/a> and start loving what you do.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/the-inevitability-of-bitcoin\/\">Develop laser eyes<\/a> and start living life free of financial concern.<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>\ud83e\udd2f<\/b><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We all have misconceptions.
