given that you&#8217;re considering a &#8220;buy and forget&#8221;, low-cost, broadly diversified fund such as $VTSAX.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"VTSAX_Alternatives_For_Europeans\"><\/span>VTSAX Alternatives For Europeans<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>First of all, worth mentioning that $VTSAX is an index fund.<\/p>\n<p>However, the index funds available in Europe generally suck &#8211; they&#8217;re either <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/investing-expenses-full-breakdown\/\">too expensive<\/a>, have little assets under management (which can create liquidity and\/or longevity concerns as your portfolio grows), or are available only <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/northern-trust-funds-vs-etfs-full-comparison\/\">through an expensive intermediary<\/a> (such as a bank) working for their own interest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That&#8217;s why I recommend ETFs for European investors<\/strong> &#8211; an ETF tracking an index would not be much different than an index fund in terms of performance.<\/p>\n<p>Below are 5 <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/etfs-exchange-traded-funds\/\">ETFs<\/a> that you can use to implement the same investment strategy:<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_CSPX_iShares_Core_S_P_500_UCITS_ETF\"><\/span>1. <strong>CSPX<\/strong> (iShares Core S&amp;P 500 UCITS ETF)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ishares.com\/uk\/individual\/en\/products\/253743\/ishares-sp-500-b-ucits-etf-acc-fund\">$CSPX<\/a> is an ETF tracking the S&amp;P 500 &#8211; an index composed of the largest US companies weighted by <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/market-cap-vs-fully-diluted-valuation-fdv-explanation-practical-analysis\/\">market cap<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Differences with $VTSAX:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$CSPX only includes large-cap companies, $VTSAX also includes mid-cap and small-cap companies<\/li>\n<li>$CSPX has a TER of 0.07%, $VTSAX has a TER of 0.04%<\/li>\n<li>$CSPX is an <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/accumulating-vs-distributing-etfs\/\"><em>accumulating fund<\/em><\/a> (reinvests the dividends), $VTSAX is a <em>distributing fund<\/em> (pays out dividends)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_IUSA_iShares_Core_S_P_500_UCITS_ETF\"><\/span>2. <strong>IUSA<\/strong> (iShares Core S&amp;P 500 UCITS ETF)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ishares.com\/uk\/individual\/en\/products\/251900\/ishares-sp-500-ucits-etf-inc-fund\">$IUSA<\/a> is also an S&amp;P 500 tracker offered by iShares.<\/p>\n<p>This makes it very similar to $CSPX, especially that it also has the same expense ratio of 0.07%.<\/p>\n<p>The main difference compared to the previous option is that IUSA also <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/dividend-investing-is-for-suckers\/\">pays dividends<\/a>, making it more similar to $VTSAX.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_VUSA_Vanguard_S_P_500_UCITS_ETF\"><\/span>3. <strong>VUSA<\/strong> (Vanguard S&amp;P 500 UCITS ETF)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanguardinvestor.co.uk\/investments\/vanguard-s-and-p-500-ucits-etf-usd-distributing\">$VUSA<\/a> is the $IUSA equivalent offered by Vanguard.<\/p>\n<p>They have exactly the same characteristics: both track the S&amp;P 500, have 0.07% expense ratio, and pay out dividends.<\/p>\n<p>The only differences are that $VUSA is a larger fund and does full replication while $IUSA does optimized sampling of the index, which makes the performance of $VUSA (slightly) closer to that of the S&amp;P 500.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_VWCE_Vanguard_FTSE_All-World_UCITS_ETF\"><\/span>4. <strong>VWCE<\/strong> (Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanguard.co.uk\/professional\/product\/etf\/equity\/9679\/ftse-all-world-ucits-etf-usd-accumulating\">$VWCE<\/a> is also a market-cap weighted ETF offered by Vanguard that tracks over 3700 companies <strong>from all around the world<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It includes the developed markets (US\/EU\/CA\/AU\/JP), but also <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/the-best-emerging-market-etf-for-europeans\/\">emerging markets<\/a> (i.e. emerging Asia, Latin America, Middle East\/Africa). Of course, $VWCE is not 1-to-1 substitute of $VTSAX, but the similarity lays in the investment style &#8211; buy a single product and be done with it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Differences with $VTSAX:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$VWCE is globally diversified, $VTSAX includes only US companies<\/li>\n<li>$VWCE includes large and mid-cap companies, $VTSAX also includes small-cap companies<\/li>\n<li>$VWCE has a <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/total-expense-ratio-the-importance-of-keeping-it-low\/\">TER<\/a> of 0.22%, $VTSAX has a TER of 0.04%<\/li>\n<li>$VWCE is an <em>accumulating fund<\/em>, $VTSAX is a <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/accumulating-vs-distributing-etfs\/\"><em>distributing fund<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you&#8217;d prefer an ETF that pays out dividends instead, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanguardinvestor.co.uk\/investments\/vanguard-ftse-all-world-ucits-etf-usd-distributing\/overview\">$VWRL<\/a> is the distributing equivalent of $VWCE.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_IWDA_iShares_Core_MSCI_World_UCITS_ETF\"><\/span>5. <strong>IWDA<\/strong> (iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ishares.com\/uk\/individual\/en\/products\/251882\/ishares-msci-world-ucits-etf-acc-fund\">$IWDA<\/a> is a market-cap weighted ETF offered by iShares that tracks over 1500 companies from over 20 developed countries.<\/p>\n<p>It is an accumulating fund and has an expense ratio of 0.2%, slightly lower than $VWRL and $VWCE.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to the previous entry, this makes the ETF more globally diversified than $VTSAX. Unlike the previous entry though, $IWDA does not cover emerging markets.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the inclusion of emerging markets is optional, and for investors that don&#8217;t want EM exposure, $IWDA can also be a candidate for building a one-fund portfolio.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Verdict\"><\/span>The Verdict<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>In my opinion, $CSPX has a clear advantage over the alternatives.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s as close as it gets to <em>&#8220;VTSAX in Europe&#8221;, <\/em>but let&#8217;s compare it with the other ETFs:<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Advantages_over_VWCEVWRLIWDA\"><\/span>Advantages over VWCE\/VWRL\/IWDA:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There&#8217;s a crucial difference between $CSPX and $VWCE\/$IWDA: <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/total-expense-ratio-the-importance-of-keeping-it-low\/\">the total expense ratio<\/a>.
