For the purposes of this post, these are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Market Order<\/li>\n<li>Limit Order<\/li>\n<li>Stop Order<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s see what each of them mean in more detail:<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Market_Order\"><\/span><span id=\"Market_Order\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span>Market Order<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A market order is the simplest order of all.<\/p>\n<p>To execute this type of order, the only field you need to fill in is the\u00a0<strong>Amount<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The amount field signifies how many shares of your chosen product you\u2019re willing to buy.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you want to invest $1,000 and a share of your <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/etfs-exchange-traded-funds\/\">ETF<\/a> costs $10. This means that you would put 100 in the amount field.<\/p>\n<p>And with most brokers, this is not a calculation you\u2019ll need to do yourself. There\u2019s usually a\u00a0<strong>Total\u00a0<\/strong>field right beneath it. It automatically calculates the total amount you\u2019d spend if you buy that amount of shares.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, in a market order you\u2019re not specifying your preferred price. So the broker will match you to the\u00a0<strong>best available sell price\u00a0<\/strong>at that moment.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how a market order would look like, buying 3 shares of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ishares.com\/ch\/individual\/en\/products\/251861\/ishares-msci-europe-ucits-etf-acc-fund\">$IMAE<\/a> on IBKR:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2865 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/dpetkovski\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/market-order.png\" alt=\"market-order\" width=\"474\" height=\"762\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Limit_Order\"><\/span>Limit Order<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A limit order is one of the most commonly used types of orders.<\/p>\n<p>To execute a limit order, you\u2019ll need to fill in the\u00a0<strong>Amount\u00a0<\/strong>field, but also the\u00a0<strong>Limit Price\u00a0<\/strong>field.<\/p>\n<p>The Amount field signifies exactly the same thing as in a market order \u2013 the amount of shares you\u2019re willing to buy. But besides that, you also specify the Limit Price \u2013 the price you\u2019re willing to pay for each share.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say your ETF is trading at <strong>around\u00a0<\/strong>$10 per share and you\u2019re willing to buy 100 shares at $10, not above. You would put 10 for the Amount and $10 for the Limit Price.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A limit price ensures that you would buy the shares at the price at or lower than the one you specify.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whenever there is an adequate seller, the broker will match your orders and execute them.<\/p>\n<p>A limit order is \u201csafer\u201d than a market order, especially for larger purchases, because it allows the investor to specify a maximum price.<\/p>\n<p>Note: in the example above, you\u2019re also free to put the Limit Price to $2. However, this order won&#8217;t get executed. At the same time, you can also put the Limit Price to $50. In this case, the broker will still match you with the best sell price, which would be around $10. Again, a limit order executes at the price <strong>at\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0<strong>lower\u00a0<\/strong>than the one you specify.<\/p>\n<p>In the example picture below, I\u2019m buying 10 shares of <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/cspx-vs-vusa-vs-iusa-my-thoughts\">$CSPX<\/a> for a maximum price of \u20ac415 per share.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2866 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/dpetkovski\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/limit-order.png\" alt=\"limit-order\" width=\"470\" height=\"762\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stop_Order\"><\/span>Stop Order<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A stop order is an order that triggers a market order at a price higher than the one specified by the investor.<\/p>\n<p>As a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/index-investing-index-funds-a-gentle-introduction\">long-term index investor<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/the-inevitability-of-bitcoin\/\">long-term Bitcoiner hodler<\/a>\u00a0you\u2019ll probably never use a stop order. But I still want to cover it just so you know that there\u2019s more than just market and limit orders.<\/p>\n<p>Stop orders are usually used by investors who want to buy a stock \u201cwhen it recovers\u201d. For example, if the price per share dumped from $20 to $8, an investor might think\u00a0<em>\u201cIt\u2019s probably game over\u2026 But if it rises back to $10, I\u2019m buying 100 shares\u201d<\/em>. Then, he can place a stop order with Amount of 100 and a Stop price of $10. This means that once\/if the price reaches $10, there\u2019ll be a market order for the 100 shares.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to a limit order, a stop order may never be executed if the price doesn\u2019t reach the target.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a complete list, but just the simplest of the buy-order types. You can read more about various types and their analogous\u00a0<strong>sell order\u00a0<\/strong>counterparts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Order_(exchange)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. For the purposes of a long-term passive portfolio, market and limit orders are all you need.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Market_Order_vs_Limit_Order\"><\/span><span id=\"Market_Order_vs_Limit_Order\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span>Market Order vs Limit Order<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you understand what each of them represents, it\u2019s really easy to choose what suits your needs.<\/p>\n<p>I usually did\u00a0<strong>market orders\u00a0<\/strong>for my regular contributions. Given the amount of trading volume, it\u2019s highly improbable that the price will rise significantly between the time I click buy and it gets filled. Moving the market is not something you should be worried about if you\u2019re not buying in the 7 digits.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, when I do larger <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/lump-sum-strategy-time-in-the-market-done-right\/\">lump-sum investments<\/a> (or selling larger amounts <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/tales-from-the-last-cycle-exit-crypto-in-profit\/\">as described here<\/a>), I exclusively use\u00a0<strong>limit orders<\/strong>. That ensures that I won\u2019t end up paying higher, which can happen with products with insufficient liquidity or in <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/market-efficiency-efficient-market-hypothesis\/\">less efficient markets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It basically depends on the size of the trade. But if you want to be unnecessarily safe even with small amounts, you can&#8217;t go wrong with\u00a0<strong>Limit Orders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Time-in-Force\"><\/span><span id=\"Time-in-Force\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span>Time-in-Force<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Apart from the\u00a0<strong>type of order<\/strong>, you also need to specify the\u00a0<strong>time-in-force<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Time in force represents a time period in which the order will remain active (i.e. can be executed).
