in Switzerland\">Wealth Tax in Switzerland<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-9\" href=\"http:\/\/localhost\/dpetkovski\/net-worth-taxation-in-europe-eu-wealth-taxes\/#Afterword\" title=\"Afterword\">Afterword<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wealth_Tax_in_France\"><\/span>Wealth Tax in France<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>The French wealth tax is applicable to <span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">investors with more than ~\u20ac1.3m in worldwide real estate.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>The rates are between 0.5% and 1.5%, based on the current value of the properties.<\/p>\r\n<p>Other assets, such as stocks, crypto, precious metals, etc., aren&#8217;t in scope. There is a capital gains tax regime for those.<\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wealth_Tax_in_Italy\"><\/span>Wealth Tax in Italy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>Italy levies wealth taxes on investors&#8217; total net-worth, with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/taxsummaries.pwc.com\/italy\">separate rate<\/a>\u00a0for foreign real estate (around 0.8%) and movable assets (around 0.2%).<\/p>\r\n<p>Besides this tax, there is also a capital gains tax when selling investments.<\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wealth_Tax_in_Liechtenstein\"><\/span>Wealth Tax in Liechtenstein<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>To understand Liechtenstein&#8217;s wealth taxes, it&#8217;s easier if we first cover the income tax rates in the country.<\/p>\r\n<p>In summary, the income taxes in Liechtenstein are quite low for EU standards &#8211; they range <a href=\"https:\/\/taxsummaries.pwc.com\/liechtenstein\/individual\/taxes-on-personal-income\">from 1% to 8%<\/a>, with the highest rate being applied on income above CHF200k.<\/p>\r\n<p>Now, the wealth tax: the tax authorities assume a 4% net-worth growth, regardless of an individual&#8217;s actual performance. And then, the assumed growth is taxed as income.<\/p>\r\n<p>In summary, the wealth tax is between 0.04% (1% of 4%) and 0.32% (8% of 4%).<\/p>\r\n<p>There are no additional investment taxes besides this.<\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wealth_Tax_in_The_Netherlands\"><\/span>Wealth Tax in The Netherlands<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>Similar to Liechtenstein, the wealth tax in the Netherlands is based on assumed growth.<\/p>\r\n<p>But the Dutch wealth taxes are more variable &#8211; the assumption is that investors realize the market\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/cash-vs-stocks-in-30-years\">long-term returns<\/a> (6%-7%-8%) and then a 35%-36% &#8220;capital gains&#8221; rate is applied.<\/p>\r\n<p>Effectively, it\u2019s a wealth tax <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/capital-gains-and-wealth-tax-in-the-netherlands-box-3-taxes\/\">between 1.5% and 2.5%<\/a> on the net-worth above ~\u20ac60k.<\/p>\r\n<p>There are no actual capital gains taxes besides this.<\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wealth_Tax_in_Norway\"><\/span>Wealth Tax in Norway<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>The wealth taxes in Norway are straight forward:\u00a01.1% on the assets above NOK20M (~\u20ac1.7M).<\/p>\r\n<p>Norway also has capital gains tax besides the net-worth based taxation.<\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wealth_Tax_in_Portugal\"><\/span>Wealth Tax in Portugal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>Similar to France, Portugal only levies wealth taxes on real estate.<\/p>\r\n<p>The rates are different based on the properties&#8217; value: starting from 0.7% above \u20ac600k and 1% above \u20ac1M.<\/p>\r\n<p>Other assets aren&#8217;t in scope and there is a separate capital gains system for them.<\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wealth_Tax_in_Spain\"><\/span>Wealth Tax in Spain<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>The wealth taxes in Spain are progressive (from 0.3% to 3.5%).\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to give the exact calculation country-wide as different regions have \u201ctax reliefs\u201d (deductions), so it differs per location.<\/p>\r\n<p>In general, individuals with net-worth between \u20ac3M and \u20ac10M will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/taxsummaries.pwc.com\/spain\/individual\/other-taxes\">end up paying around 2%<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Besides the wealth tax, Spain also levies capital gains taxes.<\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wealth_Tax_in_Switzerland\"><\/span>Wealth Tax in Switzerland<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>Switzerland implements wealth taxes as a percentage of investor&#8217;s net-worth above a certain threshold.<\/p>\r\n<p>Similar to Spain, it&#8217;s difficult to cover it country-wide as it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thepoorswiss.com\/wealth-tax\">differs per canton<\/a>. But for example, in Zurich, the <span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">wealth tax starts at 0.05% from CHF77k and increases to 0.3% from CHF3.1M.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>There aren&#8217;t additional capital gains taxes in Switzerland.<\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Afterword\"><\/span>Afterword<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>Understanding the wealth tax across EU is crucial for expats and investors.<\/p>\r\n<p>Based on your circumstances, you might prefer net-worth based taxation over capital gains or the other way around. Active and <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/tales-from-the-last-cycle-exit-crypto-in-profit\/\">successful traders<\/a> might prefer to pay a flat fee and be done with it, while <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/index-investing-index-funds-a-gentle-introduction\/\">passive investors<\/a> would prefer capital gains tax.<\/p>\r\n<p>I already covered <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/capital-gains-taxes-in-all-eu-countries-for-etf-investors\/\">all EU countries&#8217; capital gains taxes<\/a>, if you&#8217;re interested.<\/p>\r\n<p>When you&#8217;re setting up your residency, it&#8217;s important to understand the present and future tax consequences of it.
