Banks, Passports, Residencies, Driving Licences, Assets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As investors, many of us understand the role of diversifying our portfolio across assets and asset classes.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you&#8217;re pursuing a free and abundant life, handling the financial aspect is just the <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/50-facts-to-wake-you-up-from-oppression\/\">base layer of the pyramid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this post, I want to give examples of <strong>diversification<\/strong> that most people don&#8217;t consider &#8211; All of a sudden, his <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/funds-frozen-account-closed-uk-banks-target-cryptocurrency-owners\/\">bank account is frozen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>No food and utilities for the chap as well.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Imagine being a Canadian exercising your freedom of peaceful assembly and association.<\/p>\n<p>But since the regime really doesn&#8217;t like what you stand for, your actions are labeled as &#8220;rise of ideologically motivated extremism&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>And you know where this leads&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada_convoy_protest\">Bank account frozen<\/a>, no food for you as well.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>These things can happen to anyone at any time. You can&#8217;t prevent them as it&#8217;s not up to you.<\/p>\n<p>But what you can do is position yourself in a way where your life can continue normally even if a financial institution decides\/is ordered to close your account.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diversifying_Passports_Citizenships\"><\/span>Diversifying Passports &amp; Citizenships<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Having a second citizenship can be literally life saving in many cases.<\/p>\n<p>Especially for people that live under more oppressive regimes or suffer from government overreach.<\/p>\n<p>But to keep this section light, I&#8217;ll describe situations of more practical nature. And I think I described it best in my post <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/7-reasons-to-acquire-multiple-citizenships\">7 Reasons to Acquire Multiple Citizenships<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When I moved to the Netherlands as a non-EU citizen, I needed to do a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/allaboutexpats.nl\/tuberculosis-test\">Tuberculosis test<\/a>\u00a0as part of the residence permit requirement.<\/p>\n<p>My girlfriend that moved with me <strong>from the same country<\/strong> didn\u2019t have to do it because she had a Hungarian passport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>A few years later, we got married during the Covid lockdowns and embarked on multiple journeys shortly after.<\/p>\n<p>Both of us have acquired Dutch citizenship by then.<\/p>\n<p>When travelling back from a non-EU country, we were asked for vaccination certificates or negative Covid tests. We didn\u2019t have any, but we had an extra passport.<\/p>\n<p>We just gave this piece of paper and the requirement to be inconvenienced magically disappeared.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Same people, same travel destinations<\/strong>, but imaginary rules didn\u2019t apply anymore.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Don&#8217;t get me started on how it felt my whole youth wondering why my home country almost never even showed up when I wanted to register for any global financial service&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But people from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanctionsmap.eu\/#\/main\">Iran, Cuba, or Russia<\/a> can understand even today&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Unless they have a second nationality.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diversifying_Residence_Permits\"><\/span>Diversifying Residence Permits<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Residence permits are pretty related with nationalities, but oftentimes you can have the right of unlimited stay without being a national of a country.<\/p>\n<p>Every EU citizen knows this &#8211; we have the <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/policies\/justice-and-fundamental-rights\/eu-citizenship-and-democracy\/free-movement-and-residence_en\">freedom of movement and residence<\/a> anywhere in the union. No questions asked.<\/p>\n<p>But if an Australian is fed up with some new regulation that&#8217;s significantly affects his family, he can&#8217;t just leave the country. He&#8217;d need to either find a job, a spouse, or satisfy any arbitrary condition of an arbitrary country to be accepted as a legal resident.<\/p>\n<p>But if I don&#8217;t like paying the <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/capital-gains-and-wealth-tax-in-the-netherlands-box-3-taxes\">Dutch wealth taxes<\/a>, I can cross the border and settle in Belgium, case closed. Something similar happened on a larger scale &#8211; an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investorschronicle.co.uk\/content\/c2a0a5ab-11a8-50a3-a098-240f320fc795\">exodus of French millionaires<\/a> when France introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/net-worth-taxation-in-europe-eu-wealth-taxes\/\">net worth based taxation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tax optimization is not for everyone, but remember that legal residence in a place also grants other benefits: work opportunities, higher quality education &amp; healthcare, safety measures&#8230; All the way to human rights.<\/p>\n<p>So the more residence permits or long-term visas you can acquire, the more your personal freedom index grows. And you&#8217;ll feel it in day to day life, because you&#8217;ll know you don&#8217;t <a href=\"https:\/\/dpetkovski.com\/50-facts-to-wake-you-up-from-oppression\/\">depend on a single government<\/a> and that you have a choice.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diversifying_Driving_Licences\"><\/span>Diversifying Driving Licences<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I wondered if I should include this, as it&#8217;s more on the practical side rather than maximizing freedom.<\/p>\n<p>But still, you enjoy your new car on an empty German autobahn and you get flashed from a sneakily positioned speed cam. Maybe due to your negligence or due to bureaucrats being petty after <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/germany-sells-off-final-bitcoin-064941448.html\">failing at managing their budget<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, they issue a driving ban and your German driving licence is revoked for a season.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, you go on vacation in the USA and you want to rent a car for your trip.<\/p>\n<p>You give them your Georgian driving licence and life goes on as usual.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diversifying_Assets\"><\/span>Diversifying Assets<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>And last but not least, our bread and butter, the diversification of assets.<\/p>\n<p>Most people, even those that pursue personal freedom, usually aren&#8217;t really diversified outside of traditional assets.<\/p>\n<p>And of course everyone should double down on a market they understand and made a fortune in.
