SGA Preterm Baby to Strong Toddler – 2 Years Development

It’s been more than a year since I posted an update on my son’s growth. Now that he turned 2, it’s time for another progress report.

For those new here, he was born prematurely and was small for gestational age (SGA). And by his second birthday, he didn’t just catch up – he is surpassing his peers.

My inspiration for posting his growth stats is to reassure parents whose babies face the preterm + SGA combo. First-hand stories would’ve been of great help for me 2 years ago, so this is my contribution.

But the long story short is: don’t worry. ๐Ÿ™‚

Two Years Height Chart

Off the charts! ๐Ÿš€

What an experience – from being born below the 5th percentile to above the 99th.

And indeed, people often talk to him like to a 4 year old and are very surprised when we share his age.

Here’s his height at every measurement:

  • At birth: 47cm (18.5 inches)
  • 1st month: 53cm (20.86 inches)
  • 2nd month: 56cm (22.04 inches)
  • 3rd month: 62cm (24.4 inches)
  • 4th month: 65cm (25.6 inches)
  • 5th month: 66cm (26 inches)
  • 6th month: 67cm (26.38 inches)
  • 7th month: 69cm (27.16 inches)
  • 8th month: 71.5cm (28.14 inches)
  • 9th month: 72cm (28.34 inches)
  • 10th month: 74cm (29.13 inches)
  • 11th month: 76.5cm (30.11 inches)
  • 12th month: 79cm (31.1 inches)
  • 16th month: 85.7cm (33.74 inches)
  • 24th month: 96cm (37.79 inches)

As you can see, we stopped with monthly tracking after his first year, but the 16th and 24th month measurements were sufficient to extrapolate.

Two Years Weight Chart

Excellent development with his weight as well.

Again, from small for gestational age to above average. Here are the measurements:

  • At birth:ย 2050g (4.52lbs)
  • 1st month:ย 3050g (6.72lbs)
  • 2nd month:ย 3940g (8.68lbs)
  • 3rd month:ย 5020g (11.06lbs)
  • 4th month:ย 5610g (12.37lbs)
  • 5th month:ย 6100g (13.45lbs)
  • 6th month:ย 6600g (14.55lbs)
  • 7th month:ย 7170g (15.80lbs)
  • 8th month:ย 7815g (17.22lbs)
  • 9th month: 8580g (18.91lbs)
  • 10th month: 9330g (20.57lbs)
  • 11th month: 9526g (21lbs)
  • 12th month: 10,015g (22.07lbs)
  • 16th month: 11.44kg (25.22lbs)
  • 24th month: 12.8kg (28.21lbs)

Not much to add here – he eats well, enjoys food, and we didn’t train him to be picky eater.

I hope my wife can write a longer post on this topic… As a father and a man with a clear role in my home and society, my talents lie far away from the kitchen. โ™‚๏ธ

As in the previous updates, I’ll share some of my son’s progress and development.

It’s been a joy to witness every milestone firsthand, as we’re both able to be by his side full-time. No daycare, no “system”, no nannies.

We’re happy to have enabled him the freedom to run his own schedule. And the result is a kid who’s constantly smiling, curious, and full of energy – enjoying diverse activities, dancing to various genres of music, exposure to multiple languages through songs and books, etc.

Interestingly, he’s already able to “read”… as in: he distinguishes all letters and can sound them out phonetically. We show him A, he says “/a/”, We show him “QTG” he says “/ku/ /t/ /g/”, etc. Of course, he can’t pronounce words based on text, but can read even longer words letter by letter. For example, his name has 7 letters and he has no problems reading it one letter at a time.

Yes, somehow he learned the whole alphabet and digits at 2 years! ๐Ÿ™‚ Mostly by listening to songs and asking us what certain symbols represent while reading his books or immersing in our neighbors’ cars’ licence plates.

Talking about our neighborhood, his stamina is superb. He walks/runs for kilometers before needing a break.

We often end up working out together. ๐Ÿ’ช

Actually, he was a big inspiration for me to start training regularly again. And apparently I’m inspiring him right back – the feeling is mutual as he tries to mimic my exercises.

Besides our spontaneous sessions, I also make sure he retains his baby-like mobility, so that he doesn’t need to re-adapt to movements when he decides to go pro in MMA.

Apart from this, the little warrior is quite social. He doesn’t withhold his voice or curiosity around new people.

As parents, we’ve followed his lead and never pushed him to “perform”. This allowed the development of a natural/unforced confidence, making him adaptable not only to new people, but also to experiences and environments.

We’ve visited over 20 countries together and he always fits into the crew perfectly.

Whether we’re flying or doing a long road trip, whether in nature or in a big city – the little explorer handles it like a natural.

I’m very eager to witness what’s next and document his growth going further!

Thank you for reading. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฅ‚๐Ÿ‘ถ
